In Germany and Peru mother’s day is on the second Sunday of May and in Mexico it is on the 10th of May regardless of what day of the week it falls, so there kind of have always been two days to celebrate Mother’s Day in this family and I am so very glad about it because they are my favorite days of the year. This year, Mother’s Day falls on the same date for all my cultures and this makes me super excited because all the mothers that surround me, my own mother, my mother-in-law, my sister, my mothers tribe in Mexico, my mothers tribe in Germany and my mothers tribe in Montreal we all get to celebrate on the same day! I have never given any holidays or celebrations much importance to be honest. If anybody forgot my birthday…whatever…really, no big deal. My husband and I (!) have both forgotten our wedding anniversary before and while I do like celebrating that, it just isn’t a big deal if we forget to do it the right day. Mother’s Day, however, has always been a big deal for me. How couldn’t it? It is the day my passion and all work is thanked. The most painful but also most wonderful and beautiful and transformative two days in my life are commemorated. My life purpose is celebrated. “Mother” in my eyes, is the most important title I hold. “A mother” is what I first and foremost AM and WANT to be and WILL be with all my passion to the day I die!! It wasn’t until I myself became a mother that I knew what my mother felt for me. It is the strongest and purest unconditional love a human can feel. It is indescribable and there is no way you can know until you feel it yourself. Both, birth and motherhood are things that are beyond words and cannot be specified in its entirety. If I could go back in time and change things in my life I might change some things (maybe not!) but two things I would never change are who I chose as a father for my children and having them when I had them and the way I had them. They are practically perfect in every way! I love them to pieces and I want this love I and any mother feels for her child/children to be celebrated by absolutely everybody because life doesn’t come with a manual, it comes with a mother. Thank you mother (Mami) for being my manual, my guide in life, for loving me the way you did and do and will continue to do forever with all your passion until the day you die. Thank you for everything. For every night you got up to soothe me, for every boo-boo you kissed away, for every meal you prepared with love, for every trip to all my afternoon activities, for drying my tears when I felt heart ache, for guiding me through the difficulties of adolescence for giving me wings to fly and roots to stand strong in the many soils I have been given as a heritage, for teaching me all you know, for helping deliver my own daughter and for loving my children unconditionally beyond time and space and for still being there for me whenever I need you 32 years after having given birth to me after a 24-hour labor marathon. Thank you, thank you from the deep far bottom of my heart, I know what you feel and I feel so important and precious knowing a person can feel this….FOR ME!
This was created for you Mami:
Now to all my readers, go into the kitchen and bake your mommas a little beautiful something. If she lives far away like mine, you won’t be able to share them with her but it doesn’t matter. It is the gestures that count. You can eat them in her honor and thank her in your mind for everything she has done for you.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Strawberry Yogurt in Almond Cocoa Cups
Ingredients
- 1 pound strawberries
- 200-300 g greek yoghurt (full-fat unsweetened )
- maple sugar or coconut sugar
- 12 Almond Cocoa Cups (recipe here: http://greenhealthycooking.com/almond-cocoa-cups/)
Instructions
- Wash and hull strawberries, and cut into 1/4" (0,5cm) big pieces and put in a large bowl.
- Mix in 200-300 grams of greek yogurt depending on how fruity or yogurty you like the mix to be. Don't use low or no fat yogurt in this case, it will be too liquid and not creamy as full-fat.
- Add maple sugar or if you can't find in your country replace by coconut sugar to sweeten to your liking (but pleeeease make a big effort to find maple sugar, it makes a huge difference)
- Add strawberry yogurt to each of your cups and enjoy, preferably with your mother.
